Description:
The Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program is a supplemental food program for pregnant, breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding postpartum women, infants and children up to age 5 that are found to be at nutritional risk. The purpose of the program is to provide supplemental foods and nutrition education to eligible persons. The program serves as an adjunct to quality healthcare through nutrition education and counseling, providing nutritious healthy foods, screening and referrals to other healthcare systems. The WIC Program is funded and administered by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The WIC program provides nutritious foods such as infant formula, milk, eggs, cheese, dried or canned beans, peanut butter, fresh, frozen or canned fruits and vegetables, cereal, and infant baby food, as well as whole enriched grains. WIC focuses on the overall health of women, infants, and children as well as promoting healthy pregnancy outcomes and the promotion of healthy eating for families. It also provides nutrition education, breastfeeding support and referrals to other health care providers programs in the Norfolk Department of Public Health such as baby care, immunizations, car seat and smoking cessation programs.
