Description:
The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants & Children (WIC) was established nationally in 1972 to provide women, infants and children up to five years of age with nutrition education and supplementary nutritious foods, and referrals to appropriate health services. WIC is a preventive program whose goal is to reduce and prevent nutrition related health problems. Nutrition education is an essential WIC program benefit. It is directed toward achieving positive changes in client knowledge, attitude and behavior about food consumption, and is designed to achieve the following broad goals: Emphasize the relationship between proper nutrition and good health; Promote breastfeeding and provide support to all pregnant women and new mothers; Assist the individual who is a nutritional risk to achieve positive change in food habits.
