Description:
The WIC program is a nutrition education and supplemental food program for eligible women who are either pregnant, breastfeeding, or have had an infant within the last 6 months. Infants and children up to age five who may be at nutritional or medical risk are also eligible. WIC provides vouchers for free nutritious foods which include milk, cheese, tofu, eggs, peanut butter, beans, whole grain bread, brown rice and cereal, and fruits and vegetables. WIC promotes breastfeeding and offers support and guidance, and offers breast pumps for eligible women. WIC has a breastfeeding peer counselor on staff available to talk with you about your questions or concerns. In addition, a toll free National Breastfeeding Helpline sponsored by the US Department of Health and Human Services and the National Women’s Health Information Center is available. The staff of the Sullivan County WIC Program is dedicated to improving the health and quality of life of all its participants through access to healthy foods, health and nutrition education and support, smoking cessation and support, and referrals to other agencies as appropriate.
