Description:: HOPE Center Health Clinic was established in 1990 to assist in providing prenatal care for uninsured women in the Edmond community who would otherwise be without. WIC services were added in 1993 to help meet the nutrition needs of women, along with their infants and young children. In the past year, the HOPE Center Health Clinic held 18,457 appointments. At these appointments, participants were given one-on-one, in depth nutrition counseling. As part of receiving assistance from the WIC program, mothers are required to attend classes concerning topics that include breastfeeding, proper nutrition and physical activity needs for both mother and child. Mothers and children who are at nutritional risk are given even more focused counseling. Pregnant mothers are taught how to improve their health, and in turn the health of their unborn child. Prenatal nutrition education improves fetal birth weight and health, and decreases fetal mortality rate. Due to this effort and many other strategies, Oklahoma has decreased its infant mortality rate to 6.8 deaths per/1000, the lowest our state has seen. We also counsel our mothers on breastfeeding technique, which improves breastfeeding success rates. Breastfeeding decreases the risk for many chronic diseases later on in life, which further enhances the health of our future generations. The WIC program was starting in the 1960’s to help fill the void of nutritionally at risk women and their children. The program serves pregnant women, postpartum women, and children birth through age 5. A dual program, WIC provides supplemental food assistance as well as nutrition and breastfeeding counseling. Since 1990, the HOPE Center Health Clinic has been able to assist thousands of women and children by enhancing their knowledge and use of nutrition education. We have also been able to aid pregnant moms deliver healthy, happy babies and successfully breastfeed them. We have been blessed with the births of over 1000 beautiful babies in our clinic, and hope to help many more in the years to come.
