  • Description
  • WIC is a federal supplemental nutrition program for Women, Infants and Children. We offer families checks for free healthy foods, nutrition counseling and health education, vouchers for the farmer’s market, breastfeeding support and referrals for health care and other social services. The WIC program is dedicated to improving pregnancy outcomes, reducing the number of low birth weight infants, supporting and encouraging breastfeeding, and supporting the growth and development of infants and children. Studies have shown that WIC participation increases the duration of a pregnancy and decreases incidence of premature births, improves weight gain in pregnant women, reduces fetal deaths and infant mortality, lowers the incidence of low birth weight infants and improves cognitive development in children. Application to the WIC program is reserved for pregnant, postpartum and breastfeeding women, and young children under the age of 5. The applicant must live in New York State; however, US citizenship is not required. Applicants currently participating in Medicaid, Food Stamps, or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) automatically meet income eligibility requirements. Families not currently receiving benefits from at least one of the aforementioned programs must prove their household income is at or below 185% of the federal poverty level.
