  • Description
  • The WIC Nutrition Program helps pregnant women, new mothers, and children up to age 5 learn about nutrition, make healthy food choices, and improve overall health. Participants receive education on infant and child feeding, child development information and assessments, and vouchers to purchase healthy foods at grocery stores and local farmers markets that help support proper growth and development. WIC is a free program for those who qualify. Research shows that poor nutrition during early childhood increases the chance of anemia, limits memory development and a child’s ability to learn, and adds to health care costs. Poor nutrition during a baby’s first five years will affect that baby for the rest of its life. During this critical period of a child’s development, WIC provides a safe, nurturing environment for education, health care and social service referrals, as well as free access to nutritious foods. Independent studies have proven WIC to be one of the nation’s most successful and cost-effective nutrition intervention programs. For every $1 spent by this program, more than $4 in subsequent health care costs are saved.
