- Description
- A nutrition program designed to detect nutritionally "at risk" women, infants and children and assistance to prevent low-birth weight and premature infants, iron deficiency anemia, failure to thrive, obesity, etc. WIC serves pregnant, breastfeeding (for one year), and postpartum (for six months) women, as well as infants and children up to five years of age. WIC promotes breastfeeding and provides special nutrition classes, individual counseling, frequent follow up to high risk clients, health assessment, health care and social service referrals, and immunizations. 3,000 children are immunized by the WIC program each month. Foods provided by the WIC Program are based on their nutritious protein, vitamin, calcium, iron and low sugar content. Nutrition and health education is also provided as well as limited nutritional health screening. Among the 8 WIC clinics, an average of 21,000 participants are seen per month. About 20,000 food packages with an average value of $47.00 are distributed per month, totalling more than $940,000 worth of food vouchers.
