- Description
- WIC is a federally-funded program that serves low and moderate income pregnant, breastfeeding, and postpartum women, infants, and children up to age 5 who have a nutrition-related health problem. The WIC program provides supplemental foods, appointments with registered dietitians, referrals to other programs and breastfeeding support services. During an appointment clients can expect a review of their medical history, nutritional intake, anthropometric screening, hemoglobin and lead testing. This comprehensive assessment leads to the issuance of a modifiable food package that may include milk, cheese, eggs, cereals, peanut butter, dry beans/peas or canned beans/peas, and fruit or vegetable juices, fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grain choices. For infants who are not breastfed formula is available along with jarred fruits, vegetables, meats and infant cereal. Special formulas are available for infants when their doctor provides written documentation that indicates specific medical diagnoses such as a premature birth.
