Below are WIC Clinics and Programs in Burlington
Community Action of Southeast Iowa administers the WIC Program for a five-county area which includes Des Moines, Henry, Lee, Louisa, and Muscatine. Our staff consists of 16 terrific dietitians, nurses and clerical professionals. The WIC Program provides basic foods, nutrition counseling and access to health services for low-income families. Nutrition counseling and classes are offered at least twice during each eligibility period which varies from six months to one year. The objectives of this counseling are to stress the relationship between proper nutrition and good health, and to assist families that are at nutritional risk in achieving a positive change in food selection or eating habits. Access to health services is provided through referrals to community-based health programs and/or to private providers. WIC clinics are held in each county varying from 1 day per month to 20 days per month depending upon participation. At the clinic, the client's income is checked to ensure they are eligible for services. Medical and nutrition screenings are conducted and education is provided. Referrals are made to programs that may benefit the family and WIC checks are issued that day. The client then uses the WIC checks at their local grocery store to buy specific, WIC eligible foods. Each check is printed with exactly what foods, brands and amounts are allowed. The store accepts the WIC check as payment for the items and no substitutions or changes are allowed.
