The WIC Program is a federally funded Special Supplemental Food and Nutrition Education for Women, Infants, and Children through the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) with oversight through the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH). WIC is nationally recognized as an effective means for improving access to nutritious foods and promoting healthier eating and lifestyles. In Northwest Indiana, NWICA staff provides women, infants, and children access to health screenings and assessments; nutrition screenings, education and counseling; breastfeeding support and promotion; referrals to other existing Indiana health, family and social services; and supplemental healthy foods designed to meet special nutritional needs. These services are available to those who are at nutritional risk and income eligible and Pregnant, breast-feeding or post-partum women; Infants up to one year of age; Children up to 5 years of age.
