WIC is the special supplemental nutrition program for women, infants and children. WIC helps income eligible women, infants and children up to age 5 who are at health risk due to inadequate nutrition. This mission is achieved by providing nutrition education, breastfeeding education and support, supplemental nutritious foods such as milk, cereal, fruits and vegetables and whole grains, and referrals to health and human service agencies. WIC has been shown to provide a wide range of benefits. They include longer pregnancies with few premature births and infant deaths, improved dietary outcomes for women and children, improved maternal health and better performance at school. In addition to health benefits, WIC participants showed significant savings in healthcare costs when compared to non-participants.
